South African cyclists now have more access to bespoke component upgrades, thanks to ROAM SPORTS. Founded in 2021, by mountain biker Matthew Stamatis, the company focuses on making high quality products available to the South African market. ROAM SPORTS’ stable of offerings is set to grow but the company launched by securing the exclusive South African distribution rights to Kogel ceramic bearings.
Utilising a blend of direct-to-consumer and a bespoke physical store distribution model, cyclists can purchase ROAM SPORTS’ products online or in select local bicycle stores. The online store runs on the Shopify platform and features nationwide shipping billed at a flat rate; except on orders containing a Kogel Kolossos oversized rear derailleur cage, or a set of pulley wheels and a bottom bracket, where shipping is free.
ROAM SPORTS launched by introducing Kogel Bearings to the South African cycling market. Designed and developed in El Paso, Texas, Kogel Bearings are the brainchild of former Belgian bicycle shop owner Ard Kessels. He was frustrated by the quality of stock bearings which many of the bikes he sold came equipped with. As a result, Kessels developed a range of bottom brackets specific to frame and crank type combinations to eliminate the use of spacers and adapters usually needed when fitting generic products. Kogel’s full product line of ceramic bottom brackets, derailleur pulleys, oversized derailer cages and wheel bearings are available, exclusively, through ROAM SPORTS in South Africa.
“I’m really excited to launch ROAM SPORTS and introduce South African riders to Kogel Bearings” company founder Matthew Stamatis said. “I’ve been using their oversized derailleur pulleys and ceramic bottom brackets on my bikes for a few months now and can attest to how smooth and fast they are. As a road- and mountain- biker myself it was essential to me that any products ROAM SPORTS sells have a real-world benefit to South African cyclists.”

New Chain Lube Eco Box from Squirt Cycling
Squirt Cycling Products are proud to introduce the plastic waste reducing Squirt Chain Lube Eco Box. The 5-litre container, of Squirt’s award-winning wax and water emulsion chain lubricant, is designed to allow individuals and workshops to refill their plastic Squirt applicator bottles; thereby reducing the amount of plastic waste. The Chain Lube Eco Box will be available internationally, via Squirt Cycling Products’ extensive distribution network.
Each Chain Lube Eco Box can save up to 41, 120-milliletre, plastic Squirt applicator bottles. The hard cardboard exterior is prominently branded, features a price chart for 50-, 120- and 500-milliletre refills, and is designed to be placed on a sales or workshop counter. Inside a soft bag is filled with 5-litres of Squirt Chain Lube; which boasts a wax and water emulsion formulation, is clean, biodegradable, suitable for all bikes and conditions, and is PFAS-Free. The Chain Lube Eco Box also features a tap and nozzle which is large enough to facilitate speedy refills, but is small enough to slot into the mouth of Squirt Chain Lube applicator bottles. This ensures spill free top-ups.
“The simple concept behind the Chain Lube Eco Box can lead to 41 fewer plastic bottles per 5-litre box being thrown away” Van Wyk pointed out.

The Tanqua Kuru – an experience like no other
The world as we know it has been transformed due to the pandemic, which has only exasperated our yearning to escape into nature. It’s therefore no surprise that cyclists are the ones pushing the boundaries for ways to channel their inner adventurer out in the wild.
Embracing this thirst for limitless freedom are event organisers of The Tanqua Kuru Bicycle Race, who take riders deep into the heart of the Tankwa Karoo for an intimate desert gravel biking experience they’ll never forget. The two-day stage race that covers 170 kilometres of gravel and loose shale is unlike any other and is the imagination of founder, Jeremy Crowder. Realising the potential gravel biking offered to cyclists wanting something different, he launched Tanqua Kuru’s inaugural bicycle race in May of this year.
“There are many ways cyclists can get out into nature, mountain biking being one of them. However, I was looking for something more visceral, and more real. Having been to the area many times, I had fallen in love with the Tankwa Karoo’s raw beauty.” Says Crowder.
Gravel bike racing has grown in popularity with more events popping up each year, but what makes Tanqua Kuru stand out is its unique focus on the experience and the value this offers the riders, not just on performance. The race is meant to challenge riders, but in a fun and social way. Riders encounter bizarre and surprising installations along the route set out by the organisers.
After a hot and long day in the saddle, riders can expect a comfortable canvas tent with proper beds, and crispy white linen, duvets, lights, charging points and even electric blankets. Another special touch are the great showers with hot water and flushing loos. All meals are fully catered for with a pop-up restaurant and bar.
The race has been specifically designed to test a modern gravel bicycle; however, it welcomes all people who love bicycles to come together to take part. The Tanqua Kuru Bicycle Race runs from Friday, 27 May to Sunday 29 May 2022. Entries opened on 1 November and is limited to 155 riders.
